PE

Intent

At Slinfold CE Primary School, our Physical Education (PE) curriculum aims to inspire every child to enjoy being active, develop a lifelong love of physical activity and understand the important role that exercise plays in supporting their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Through a broad and balanced PE curriculum, we want all of our children to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to participate successfully in a wide range of physical activities. We provide opportunities for children to develop their fundamental movement skills, coordination, strength, balance, agility and stamina, while also developing their ability to work collaboratively, communicate effectively and make decisions.

Our curriculum reflects our Christian values and promotes respect, responsibility, courage and compassion.

We want our children to understand the importance of leading healthy and active lifestyles. PE is complemented by opportunities to be active throughout the school day, both indoors and outdoors, and through participation in competitive and non-competitive sporting activities.

By the end of their time at Slinfold CE Primary School, we aim for every child to:

  • Develop a positive attitude towards physical activity and sport.

  • Have secure fundamental movement skills and apply them confidently in different activities.

  • Develop physical fitness, coordination, agility, balance and stamina.

  • Understand how physical activity contributes to a healthy lifestyle and overall wellbeing.

  • Work effectively with others, demonstrating teamwork, communication and respect.

  • Develop resilience and perseverance when faced with challenge.

  • Experience competition and learn to respond positively to both success and disappointment.

  • Develop confidence, self-belief and a willingness to try new activities.

  • Understand and demonstrate the importance of fairness, sportsmanship and respect.

  • Have the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to remain physically active beyond primary school.

SEND

Physical Education at Slinfold is accessible regardless of a young person’s additional needs. When planning our curriculum, we take into account –

  • The physical environment to ensure it is accessible for all children.
  • Modifying the equipment we use, to ensure that all learners are able to participate, enjoy and experience success in our lessons.
  • We consider the children’s preferred communication methods to ensure that lessons and activities are accessible. We use clear and precise names for strategies and techniques which support learners to acquire the knowledge they need to participate in the activity
  • Changes and adaptations can be made to activities and specific tasks to ensure all learners are able to participate fully. Adaptations can range from small, subtle changes when performing a skill through to larger modifications to the activity or sport itself.
  • A key adult can model skills, break down activities into smaller steps and support with the repetition and over-learning of skills that can be so important for children with SEND.
  • Peers can be a huge support in helping to motivate and model skills whilst ensuring all children maintain their independence and doesn’t become over-reliant on the support of a key adult.
  • Learners working in mixed ability groups. This provides aspirational role models and opportunities for the most able to develop their skills further through demonstrating and coaching.
