As part of their topic and science work, Mr Pannell came and talked to the children in Hamble and Medway about his job as a tree surgeon. They found out about different types of trees and how to care for them. The children spent time investigating different leaves, bark and fungi! They also learnt how to work out how old a tree is. It was a great way to bring their learning to life! Also, Medway would like to thank Dylan’s grandmother for coming in to talk about floristry and plants. The children loved their Snapdragon flowers and learnt about flower pressing.
On Wednesday 22nd June, the children in Reception, year 1,2 and 3 enjoyed a fabulous day out at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The children enjoyed many of the attractions from iconic buildings and glasshouses to inspirational art collections and landscapes. One of the highlights was the new Hive scuplture designed by Wolfgang Buttress, which tells the plight of the honeybee and is surrounded by a beautiful meadow. It was nothing like our hive though!
Our bee hive arrived late last night and the bees have been nestled into the far corner of the environmental area. Rother Class are going to be working with the bees as part of their Forest Schools sessions with the aim to make our own honey to sell as well as studying the life cycle.
Lesley Day, our professional bee keeper, will be watching over them every week, along with Mr Burrell who has had appropriate training from Lesley to support the teaching of bee keeping to the children. Thank you to all the parents who came along this morning to support us and find out more about our project.
What a fantastic party we had on Friday. The children sang the National Anthem, followed by a prayer and Grace before they could tuck into a piece of Victoria Sponge. The children then performed some brilliant poetry about our Queen and Pre-school sang Happy Birthday to the Queen.
Here is one of the poems from Medway Class.
Our Queen by Medway Class
Your Majesty we'd like to say a very Happy Birthday
We had a chat and thought out loud about the things that make us proud.
These are the things we hold most dear about our Queen in this special year
Her crown sparkles with rubies as red as the roses and sapphires as blue as the ocean.
She wears a necklace made of pearls that shine like stars.
She likes her people and says hello with a kind and smiley face.
she has great granchildren that are as cute as a button.
She loves walking her Corgis around the town and riding her beautiful horses up and down
She is special and one of a kind, a better Queen you will not find.
Before half term the Yr3/4 football team took part in the Broadbridge Heath 5 aside tournament. The team played well, they won 3 and lost 3, They displayed good sportsmanship and skill. Well done to Rowan Y, Archie P, Monty P, Sonny B, Oliver W and Declan P.
We look forward to having you in our Yr 5/6 team next year.
Our Green Dragons showed round our Green Flag assessor, Chris, on Thursday 26th May. We are pleased to announce that we are retaining our Green Flag status! Well done to all the Green Dragons that have been keeping us on our toes to look after our environment. The Green Dragons would also like to mention a competition called Spot a Pot. This is to encourage parents to register plastic they are recycling. We could win a prize to the Ford recycling plant if enough parents register their recycling! It is really easy to do!
On Friday the 10th June we will be celebrating the Queen’s birthday by having a tea party in the school playground in the afternoon. The children will be taking part in some fun activities in the morning and finishing the day with a little tea party where we will sing some songs, eat some birthday cake and perform some ‘Royal’ poetry. We would love it if the children wore red, white and blue for the day or wore any Union Jack items. If there are any parents that are able to volunteer and help with setting up and tidying up afterwards all for the reward of a piece of Victoria Sponge, then please let your child’s class teacher know.
