Are you ready for Switch off Fortnight?

30/11/2017

Picture
Green Dragons took Worship this morning to tell the whole school about 'Switch off Fortnight'. This is to encourage us all to reduce our carbon footprint by saving energy.
With the help of Buster and Pong's video, children found out about how our increasing use of energy is seriously causing the planet to warm up. The Greenhouse effect is a real threat to the future of our planet. Children considered ways in which we can reduce our energy use and will be receiving a fun homework task to keep them thinking about being more Eco-energy friendly.

WOW - Walk once a Week - Kickstart 2017

14/10/2017

Our local Living Streets rep came to visit us to remind us about walking to school - WOW - Walk once a Week. We had a worship thinking about the benefits of walking which included better health, reducing pollution in the environment and using less fossil fuels (reducing our carbon footprint). Walking to school also gives you time to chat with your friends or family which can be more fun too.
The highlight at the end of the day was seeing the Walk to School mascot, Strider, on the playground.

Eco-beast sculpture 2017

9/7/2017

Our Eco-beast was on display in Horsham Park today:
Made by ‘The Green Dragons’ – Slinfold School’s Eco-group.
For our eco-beast we made a green dragon because it is our mascot. He is made out of cardboard boxes and toilet roll tubes. He wasn’t very strong so we added a layer of modrock to strengthen him. Then we painted him green and added a tail. After that we made some wings out of recycled bubble wrap. Finally, we made some fire from tissue paper.

Fairtrade Fortnight

14/3/2017

Green Dragons did a Fairtrade Worship, getting children to think about where their food comes from.
The focus was on the banana trade and making sure farmers in poorer countries can get a good price for their produce.
Green Dragons challenged the Slinfold children to buy a fairtrade product over the half term holiday and return their wrappers or empty boxes to school. Thank you to the children who managed to achieve this.

SWITCH OFF FORTNIGHT

13/11/2016

Picture
Green Dragons want to remind you to think extra hard about switching off lights and appliances for 'Switch off fortnight'. We do usually do a whole school homework on this, but won't be doing one this year as it coincides with a Sumdog competition which has been our whole school homework instead.
Green Dragons will, however be running a competition for designing and energy saving poster. They will tell you about this in Worship.

Green Dragon Parking and Scooter Monitoring

13/11/2016

Picture
In response to a letter received at school from a local resident, our Green Dragons have been working hard to monitor the traffic arriving to and from school in the mornings. Even though there are zig-zag lines outside school, some cars are still parking, or pulling up on the zig-zags which makes quite risky for those children walking along the pavement to school.
Green Dragons (our school Eco-team) have been monitoring parents parking on the zig-zags outside the school and trying to deter cars from pulling up and parking on them. The children have been waving on any cars that looked like they might stop and politely asked them to move on. This has been quite effective.
Some concerns were also raised about erratic scooting along the pavement - morning and afternoon. Green Dragons have also been checking that children are being considerate with their scoot to school, stopping anyone if they are not scooting sensibly.
